September marks the very first The One box since taking on our fresh new look, which also means revamped inserts! Have an evening with The One, as we pair three courses with three beers from the box for the ultimate fancy dinner party. Plus, to get into the Oktoberfest spirit, we've included a bonus tinnie of Marzen, prost!
What's in the box:
De Ranke • XXX Bitter
Belgian Hoppy Golden Ale | 6.0% | Dottignies, Belgium
For the first time ever, we were able to get our hands on this Belgian treasure! The name De Ranke refers to the tendrils on a hop bine which is very fitting for a brewery that uses whole cone hops and produces world class bitter beers. You might have tried the XX Bitter but the folks at Brouwerij De Ranke decided to ramp things up and increase the hops by 50%, bumping up the IBUs to 75! That might sound like overkill, but the higher old-world aroma hop content (including Brewers Gold & Mittelfruh) makes for a smooth, balanced beer. Perhaps the closest thing you’ll find to a genuine Belgian IPA!
Boatrocker • Roger Ramjet 2022
Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout | 10.6% | Braeside, VIC
A US variation of one of the most sought-after barrel aged stouts in Australia! The original Ramjet releases came about through the love of American bourbon barrel aged stouts but used barrels from Aus distiller Starward. Roger Ramjet comes full circle back to the bourbon barrel inspiration with Boatrocker using 1st use Buffalo Trace & Heaven hill barrels straight out of the US. The lingering bourbon and vanillin from the barrel are what gives it it’s signature character. Roger Ramjet is a beer you could cellar and experience how the flavours evolve over time - if fact you might even have other vintages stashed away already!
Pühaste • Sanctum: Cocos
Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Coconut | 13.7% | Tartu, Estonia
The Estonian craft beer scene has been thriving in recent years and Pühaste is at the top of the list for the best of the best. Their Silver Series are limited edition beers that focus on barrel aging dark beers in different barrels to produce decadent full flavoured beers, perfect for the cold Baltic winters.
Rochefort • Triple Extra
Triple | 14.1% | Rochefort, Belgium
Brasserie de Rochefort is one of only 11 Trappist breweries left in the world, with history dating back to 1230 when Rochefort’s count, Gilles de Walcourt, and his wife founded a convent just out of the town of Rochefort. From then until now, Brasserie Rochefort has been through it all; battles, wars and revolutions with multiple re-builds. According to the monastery records, the Triple was first brewed in the 1920’s but wasn’t too popular. It was then re-brewed almost a century later, and we’re very glad they did! You’ll find the signature flavour of their other 3 beers, but with a lighter malt bill and the addition of orange peel and some spices.
Bracket • Serving Suggestion
Imperial Pastry Stout with Cacao & Vanilla | 8.2% | Alexandria, NSW
2nd BIRTHDAY BEER | Happy 2nd Birthday to Bracket Brewing! As you can imagine, the timing of opening of Bracket brewing wasn’t ideal, but they have come through the other side at #4 on Untappd’s list of highest ranked breweries in Australia. Over this time, Bracket have brewed a tonne of stouts with different adjuncts and have no plans to slow down - nor do we want them to. This imperial pastry stout, brewed in celebration of their birthday, is meant to be ‘a cake in a can’, and they’ve nailed it!
Bracket • Surrounded
Triple IPA | 10.2% | Alexandria, NSW
2nd BIRTHDAY BEER | | Bracket have built a steady and loyal following for their small batch, tasty creations and decided to brew 2 massive beers for their 2nd birthday celebrations. There was a very limited amount available, and we managed to get our hands on both for your enjoyment. This TIPA is only the second Bracket have ever brewed and its fitting that they brewed their second on their second birthday! They’ve used crowd favourite hops, Citra, Sabro and Motueka giving this beer layers upon layers of juicy, tropical and citrus characters.
White Bay • Yeh, Duh, Obviously
Hazy Double IPA | 10.2% | Rozelle, NSW
White Bay was formed back in 2019 with lagers in mind. While you might think lagers are easy drinking, which would mean easier to make, they are in fact a style that takes time and skill. Even though White Bay’s focus is on lager, they brew impressive IPAs packed full of flavour! You won’t find an IPA in their core range, they brew their IPAs as one-off batches to capture a moment in time and to showcase different recipes and techniques. ‘Yeah, Duh, Obviously’ is their most recent concoction hopped with Vic Secret, Mosaic, Motueka and Riwaka.
Bellwoods • Jelly King (Mango, Guava, Passionfruit)
Fruited Sour | 6.5% | Toronto, ON Canada
This Toronto based brewery is known for their sours, wild ales and IPAs, winning a multitude of awards for their brewing innovation. If you’ve had any beers from this popular series, you know you’re in for a treat. In this limited-edition Jelly King release, they’ve added loads of mango, guava and passionfruit, and fermented with Lactobacillus for a zesty, tropical bomb.
Sierra Nevada • Hoptimum 2022
Triple IPA | 11.0% | Chico, CA America
This triple IPA is dry hopped a massive four times with a mix of Amarillo, BRU-1, Pahto and Simcoe. This yearly release uses their ‘Hop Torpedo’ method to get the most out of dry hopping. This nifty piece of equipment works by circulating the beer out of the fermenter, where it then flows through columns of hops before being returned back to the fermenter. By adjusting the time, speed, temperature and the variety of hops, they can better control the hop aromas and flavours extracted into the beer.
Firestone Walker • Parabola 2018
Russian Imperial Stout | 13.1% | Paso Robles, CA America
This is an extra special addition to this month’s box that’s been spent some time in our cellar. This vintage of Parabola has been aged in a blend of Elijah Craig, Four Roses, Pappy Van Winkle, Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace barrels. That’s some serious bourbon business. Blending barrels isn’t an easy task - it takes skill and a refined palate, as well as a bit of science to make a beer like Parabola, and the folks at Firestone Walker are experts!
Garage Project • Omne Trium Perfectum
Bourbon Barrel Aged Wild Ale with Cherry & Coffee | 13.1% | Wellington, New Zealand
The Omni Trium Perfectum series (meaning ‘All Three Perfect’) is based on the combination of 3 unlikely ingredients that surprisingly produce a beer with perfect balance. We’ve been carefully cellaring this bottle for 3 years and has aged beautifully! Time has rounded out the flavours making it a bit too easy to drink for a 12% beer!
Hawkers • Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout 2016
Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout | 12.2% | Reservoir, VIC
One lucky last beer from our cellar to you! We’ve been saving this one for a special occasion and have been patiently cellaring it for 6 years. Aged in Wild Turkey and Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, it’s full of bourbon character and vanillins from the oak, with chocolate and a touch of bitterness to balance it out. A classic example of a barrel aged imperial stout and one of the best in Australia!
Bonus Tinnie
King River • Marzen Festbier
Marzen | 5.5% | King Valley, VIC
We’ve chucked a cheeky little bonus beer in this month’s box! Marzen is a beer brewed to celebrate the start of spring and is traditionally drank in Germany during the Oktoberfest celebrations, so we thought it very fitting - prost!
